Your Neighbor Needs You.
The Union Fire Association has protected Bala Cynwyd and Merion since 1903. Today, we need people like you to help us keep that promise.
Think volunteering only means running into burning buildings? Think again.
We need firefighters — but that's just one way to serve. The Union Fire Association runs on people with all kinds of skills: accountants, marketers, event planners, social media managers, administrators, and community leaders. If you live or work in our area and want to give something back, there's a role here for you.
You don't need experience. You don't need to be fearless. You just need to show up.
Station 28 firefighters serve the community far beyond emergency calls.
Find Your Role
Active Firefighter
Join our frontline crew. We provide all training and equipment. No prior experience required — just commitment, a willingness to learn, and the physical ability to do the work. Volunteers who work firefighting shifts are eligible for a per-shift stipend.
There are many ways to support Station 28 — choose the one that fits your life.
Administrative Volunteer
Help us run the organization behind the scenes. We need people who can assist with recordkeeping, communications, scheduling, and the day-to-day operations that keep the station functioning.
Fundraising & Events
Our annual fund drive and community events are the lifeblood of our organization. We need people who can plan, organize, promote, and execute — whether that's a gala, a community day, or a direct mail campaign.
Board of Directors
We are actively seeking community leaders to serve on our Board of Directors. If you have a background in law, finance, nonprofit governance, real estate, or community leadership, your perspective belongs at our table.
Social Media & Communications
We need someone to tell our story. If you have skills in photography, videography, graphic design, or social media management, we want to hear from you. Help us connect with the community we serve.
500 Calls a Year. Every One Matters.
From structure fires to carbon monoxide alarms, vehicle accidents to gas leaks — Station 28 responds to every call, every day, 365 days a year. When your neighbor calls 911, it's our crew that shows up. The more volunteers we have, the stronger that response is.
Every person who joins — whether they're pulling hose or managing our books — makes that response possible.
It's More Than Emergency Response.
Station 28 brings fire and life safety education to local schools, businesses, and families throughout Bala Cynwyd and Merion. We install smoke detectors, conduct community outreach, and show up for our neighbors long before there's ever an emergency.
Volunteers who support this work — whether in gear or not — are an essential part of what makes us more than just a fire station.
Station 28 provides fire safety education and outreach throughout the community.

Questions You Might Have
Do I need prior firefighting experience?
No. For firefighting roles, we provide all required training and equipment. For non-operational roles, we’ll show you what’s needed and support you as you learn.
How much time does volunteering take?
It depends on your role and your schedule. Some volunteers take regular duty shifts; others help with events or administrative work a few hours a month. We’ll work with you to find a fit that’s realistic for your life.
Is there an age requirement?
Operational firefighting volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Some support roles may be available for younger volunteers on a case-by-case basis.
Is this a paid position?
Station 28 is a volunteer fire company. Some operational volunteers may receive a modest per-shift stipend, but people join us to serve, not for a paycheck.
What happens after I submit the form?
A member of our team will reach out to you, usually within a week, to answer your questions and invite you to visit the station on a Monday night. There’s no obligation — it’s just a conversation about how you might get involved.
